Research Area

Biotechnology and bioengineering problems are interdisciplinary in food production, tackling disease, pollution, and harnessing scarce natural resources. IBB’s research combines different approaches to develop products, tools, models and methods that biological challenges.

Bioprocess and Biorefinery

Bioprocess and biorefinery are engineering disciplines that focus on the development and application of biomass-based processing technology for the synthesis of high-value chemical compounds. In general, the development and processing system includes the use of lignocellulosic supplies from agro-industry operations, microorganisms, production efficiency and optimization, and the accumulation of desired products.

Food Biotechnology

The use of technology to focusing in a vast variety of process using living organism, such as plants, animals, microbes, or any part of organism in order to develop new or improved food products and modify the genes of our food sources to improve the productivity and taste.

Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary branch of engineering that ranges from theoretical, nonexperimental undertakings to state-of-the-art applications. It can encompass research, development, implementation, and operation.

Biocatalysis and Protein Engineering

Research and development on the production technique, preservation, quality control of the food products for improving the quality and food safety.

Biomaterial

Materials to be used within the body for medical purpose.

Lab-on-a-chip devices

A lab-on-a-chip is a miniaturized device that integrates into a single chip one or several analyses, which are usually done in a laboratory; analyses such as DNA sequencing or biochemical detection.

Environmental Biotechnology

The focus of research in the field of environmental biotechnology includes the use of microbes for the treatment of household waste, agricultural by-products, medical, and industry. Biologically treated and processed waste can be utilized for small-scale energy production (electricity and gas), alternative sources of nutrients for plants, and useful chemical derivative products.

Cell and Tissue Engineering

Tissue engineering focuses on the creating or regenerating the damaged or diseased human tissue.

Nanobiotechnology

Focusing in physicochemical and biological properties of nanostructures and their applications in various areas such as medicine, food, environment and agriculture.

Bioseparation Engineering

Focused to the design and operation of small and large-scale biological product separation and purification systems. The target products obtained through separation and purification are used in pharmaceutical, food, chemical, and other sectors.

Marine Biotechnology

Biotechnology application in marine species.
